In the eighteen years since Aishwarya Rai Bachchan first stepped on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, a lot has changed and a lot has stayed the same. Her sartorial trajectory has progressed from the traditional six yards to voluminous ballgowns designed by couturiers from all over the globe, but what remains constant is her ability to deliver a showstopper moment both on and off the red carpet. Now nearing the two-decade mark at the French Riviera festival, Rai Bachchan is clearly in no mood to slow down. Having touched down at the sunny town of Cannes in a monochrome duster coat from Barbara Bui, she proceeded to pull out all stops for the second day of her Cannes 2019 campaign.
Keeping with the summery memo, Rai Bachchan showed denim some love in her showcases, starting the day with a bold take on denim-on-denim with custom separates by Falguni and Shane Peacock. The couturiers worked their signature bling into the look with diamond-encrusted floral embellishments on the floor-grazing coat and coordinated high-waisted flared pants. The star then cinched the look together with a basic white tank and a wise rain check on accessories, choosing to round off her outfit with mirrored sunnies and her signature red matte lipstick instead.
She then swapped the acid wash for a softer hue with rolled-up hems, belted and layered with a black tank under a statement floral printed jacket. Zero points for guessing her favourite colour, as she coordinated the oversized red lapels with pointy pumps and a full pout lined in the same hue. A light smattering of rings, tinted glares and a mean blow-out helped her stand out against the sparkling blue of the Riviera.
The star then returned to her favourite red carpet silhouette with a billowing gown from Columbia-based label, Leal Daccarett. Leaving the frills and feathers behind, she opted for candy cane stripes on the canvas of a strapless bodice and voluminous skirt, topped off with the metallic manicure from her high-octane Jean-Louis Sabaji outing on the red carpet the day before. With barely-there curls and her omnipresent red lippie in tow, she was ready to head out the door.
Rai Bachchan wrapped up her sartorial offerings by saving the best for the last: a sculpted metal wire jacket set from Cannes-favourite, Rimzim Dadu. The designer’s signature textured textile was served in the form of aqua blue separates, and the asymmetrical shoulders further highlighted by her beauty choices—artfully tousled waves, a creamy scarlet on her lips and a winged liner placed on top of shimmering eyeshadow.
