At the end of each year, Google compiles a list of the things we’ve all been searching for through the past 365 days. This is usually indicative of the biggest trends of the year across beats, be it fashion, beauty, lifestyle or anything else under the sun. We’re coming up on a year that was filled with big celebrity weddings, glamorous events, parties and heavily celebrated festivals—and the most searched beauty terms of 2018 certainly reflect that. The theme is undoubtedly party, as fun, going-out looks ruled the charts. Want to know which ones came up top? Here are the top five most searched beauty trends of 2018, in the order they were searched for.
1. Dewy makeup
Self-care has been a trending term and practice for 2018, so it makes sense that dewy skin (the sign of a happy, well-adjusted body) is extremely high on search. Dewy makeup is the best way to fake that glow, and thankfully there’s a whole slew of products that can help you do it. From products like the Peach and Lily Glass Refining Serum to leave skin translucent, to highlighters like the Marc Jacobs Coconut Gel Highlighter for an all-over hydrated sheen, you can easily fake it till you make it.
A dewy makeup product is usually infused with light-reflecting ingredients, has a creamy formula, covers up redness, evens out skin tone and leaves behind a lustrous glow that has the user looking like they slept a full nine hours. Meghan Markle’s fresh-faced wedding makeup inspired women everywhere to keep things natural, glowy and flushed. And at Balmain’s AW18 show too, the models had an even base and barely-there highlighter.
Vogue tip: Apply a hydrating primer, then follow with a velvety base and cream blush like Anushka Sharma for an “I woke up like this” look.

2. Smoky eyes
The classic smoky eye has been making a cool-girl comeback lately, and we’re inclined to believe that searches for the makeup trend increased tenfold after Deepika Padukone wore a heavy-handed smoky eye to her wedding this month.
Smoky eyes are bold and shouldering, and are super flattering on mostly everyone. They look timeless, classy and can amp up any nighttime look in a jiffy. In fact, AW18 made it extremely clear that the smoky eye was well and truly back—Tom Ford’s models wore a grungy smoky eye, while the version seen at Anna Sui was jewel-toned. At the Lakmé Fashion Week SS18, Kotwara saw an updated smoky eye with lots of mascara paired with a nude lip.
Vogue tip: Keep things interesting with a red carpet smoky eye like Sonam K Ahuja, who wore black kohl on the bottom and top of her eyes, with heavy mascara on the lashes.

3. Glitter eyeshadow
Glitter eyeshadow is not a new trend, but it certainly has major staying power. Throughout the year, makeup artists, celebrities and party girls got inventive in using glitter in all its forms around the eye area.
Across the pond, at the Oscar De La Renta show for AW18, the models had pink glitter on their eyelids, while at the Alice and Olivia presentation, the makeup artist used black glitter all around the eye. Janhvi Kapoor wore glittery silver eyeshadow to the Lux Golden Rose awards, and Margot Robbie recently wore red glitter eyeshadow for a movie premiere too. But that doesn’t mean glitter has to be reserved for the red carpet. A swipe of a silver, gold or copper eyeshadow on the eyes can make for an updated evening look that doesn’t need you to put in too much effort.
Vogue tip: Do like Olivia Wilde and apply a glitter copper eyeshadow all over the eye for an ultra-glam party look.

4. Pink makeup
Not just for millennials anymore, pink was undoubtedly one of 2018’s most popular hues. Traditionally the shade of femininity, fun and romance, it’s also the easiest way to add a pop of colour to the face. In 2018, though, people wore pink in all its shades—from a powdery, cloying version to a bright fuchsia.
Glossier built a whole brand upon the colour, Kim Kardashian West’s KKW Beauty launched a whole 15-piece collection inspired by cherry blossoms, and celebrities all over the world embraced pink, like Priyanka Chopra, who utilised all the rose hues across the palette for that light metallic pink eyeshadow she wore to a Chanel dinner in January. That’s not all. She turned heads with her magenta eyes and lips at the 2018 Grammys, and then wore a berry rouge lipstick on her wedding day. Even on the runways, Jeremy Scott leaned into the all-pink look on the spring/summer 2019 runway, while Nishka Lulla’s models had soft, kissable pink lips.
Vogue tip: Do a pink-on-pink-on-pink combination with pink eyeshadow, a pink flush on the cheeks and lipstick for your next brunch party. Use Alia Bhatt’s monochromatic look as inspiration.

5. Golden makeup
Gilded, metallic makeup is one of the best ways to amp up your holiday party look, and it’s clear that beauty enthusiasts think the same. First seen on every famous set of eyes at the Met Gala 2018—Gisele Bundchen, Priyanka Chopra and Selena Gomez—the golden eyeshadow trend was given Rihanna’s approval with the launch of Fenty Beauty’s cult favourite, Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Trophy Wife—a very pigmented gold powder that can be used as an eyeshadow and highlighter.
Then, at the autumn/winter 2018 shows, Akris had models with gold leaf on the eyelids, and Preen has actual flecks of gold glitter on the model’s foreheads and hair. Closer to home, the spring/summer 2019 runway at Vrisa by Rahul and Shikha saw models walk with washes of gold at the inner corners of their eyes.
Vogue tip: Apply a gold shadow at the inner corner of the eyes a la Gigi Hadid, who wore gold eyeshadow, gold nail polish and a golden Versace dress to her 23rd birthday party.
